What is PM&R?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a medical specialty that focuses on using medicine, therapy, medical equipment and medical interventions/techniques in order to maximize function and quality of life for patients with physical impairments or disabilities.
PM&R doctors work with other doctors and medical professionals to improve functional independence of patients. This can happen in a variety of settings including :
- acute hospitals
- inpatient rehab
- skilled nursing facility (SNF)
- outpatient offices
- long term acute care hospitals (LTACH)
PM&R doctors are a great resource for non-narcotic and non-surgical pain management – especially for pain associated with disorders of nerve and muscle. PM&R physicians also provide non-surgical or post-operative treatment options for patients with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions such as:
- arthritis
- neuropathy
- brain injury
- spinal cord injury
- stroke
- amputation
- myopathy
- traumatic injuries
- burns
- hereditary disorders
- birth defects
- debility due to cardiac and pulmonary disease
COVID-19 Rehabilitation
COVID-19 is caused by the virus known as SARS-CoV-2. COVID-19 is a viral disease that causes tissue damage in multiple organ systems, including lung, heart and brain. As a result of this multi-system injury, there are direct and indirect effects of COVID-19 that affect patient function and quality of life for months after the patient first reports symptoms.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Physicians assist patients during their recovery process during the acute hospital stay, inpatient rehab, subacute rehab during skilled nursing facilities and after the patient goes home (in an outpatient setting). PM&R physicians treat the neurological, cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal impairments such as :
- fatigue
- complications of blood clots (i.e stroke, amputation)
- decreased endurance
- vertigo and dizziness
- cognitive deficits (memory issues, sleep disturbance, anxiety)
- deconditioning
PM&R doctors also provide pain management for complex pain issues that arise as a result of COVID-19 disease such as:
- nerve pain
- the feeling of burning/cold skin
- joint pain
- headache
- muscle pain
Treatment plans from PM&R physicians are tailored based on the patients functional deficits and may include:
- counseling and education
- prescription for medicine
- prescription, precautions and adjustments for therapies
- referral to specialists as needed

Spinal Cord Injury and Brain Injury Education
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and Brain Injury (TBI) patients can suffer a multitude of complications due to their injuries. Due to the notable change in function after these traumatic events, it is highly recommended that these patients be under the care of a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician for assessment and treatment of their chronic complications as well as recommendations on durable medical equipment (DME) or orthotics needed to improve functional independence. AC Medical Experts provides private and confidential one-on-one consultation for TBI and SCI patients. These consultations include medical interview, medical chart review, medication review and discussion with current care providers in order to maximize patient care quality.
